RAILWAY OF THE MONTH
Sidmouth
Richard Harper recreated this east Devon seaside resort’s railway station and surrounding properties in 4mm scale, set in 1959 and 1960.

PLAN OF THE MONTH
Modelling preserved railways
The heritage railway scene can provide rich pickings for the modeller in search of a new project. Craig Tiley serves up four varied suggestions.

SCALE DRAWINGS
LNER J35 0-6-0
These sturdy 0-6-0s were designed by W P Reid for the North British Railway between 1906 and 1913; the scale drawings are by Brian Meredith.

FEATURES

Poldeen
David Greenwood took on a project to create a layout in a carry-case: this N gauge layout set in present-day Cornwall is the result.

North Level Railway
Darren Berry shows off the 4mm scale layout built by members of the Somerset Railway Modellers Club, and inspired by the GWR Taunton to Barnstaple line.

St George's Dock
Small industrial locomotives and shipping are combined by Alan Gray in this Tyneside-set layout in O gauge, reflecting the once-widespread dock systems.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH
Variations on a Parkside theme
Duncan Redford used a Parkside kit and left-over parts from a Coopercraft kit to create the prototype GWR MINK D in 4mm scale. He also describes how other versions of the type could be built.

Mileposts – a half century for the Redditch Model Railway Club
Secretary and Exhibition Manager Guy Craddock traces the history of this West Midlands club and its exhibition layouts over 50 years.

Milk traffic for Dentdale
In the latest in his series on freight flows suitable for his LMS-period Settle & Carlisle layout in OO, Ian Nuttall looks at how dairy products were transported, both in dedicated wagons and also passenger brake vans.

Byway to Llangunllo
As an introduction to his latest 4mm scale project, set in the Welsh borders west of Leominster, Geoff Forster sets the scene with a tour of the real railways.

The Webb's Wharf project – 2
Michael Watts presents an update on his minimum-space O gauge GWR scene, with emphasis on how the buildings were finished off.

Tan-y-Llyn
Echoes of the Aberglaslyn Pass in OO9 from Steve Flay; his L-shaped layout has an unusual arrangement whereby the fiddle yard is visible in the front.

Roofing sheets for baseboards
In the second instalment of this series looking at lightweight baseboards, Dave Holah reports on his use of polycarbonate roofing sheets.

In at the deep end
Frank Dineen regales us with the tale of his model of Bridport, the erstwhile west Dorset station, in OO.

Pencarne
Andy Peters returns to the railways around Bodmin in Cornwall with his latest OO project, set in Western and Southern Region days.

RAILWAY MODELLING EXPLORED
Ottilie's fold-away layout
Andrew and Ottilie Hicks turned a boxed train set into an absorbing OO gauge double-sided layout – and an interesting way of learning about the past.

Fitting loco accessory details
Most ready-to-run locomotives are supplied with a bag of detail parts for the purchaser to install. Craig Tiley presents a guide on how to do this.

Getting started with card kits
Craig Tiley presents some ‘tricks of the trade’ to help beginners and returnees get the best out of this popular modelling medium.
